Emmeline Shortsleeve (1870 - 1940)

Emmeline is a New England millworker who brings down-to-earth tales of her time in the factory, weaving by steam. She represents a wide range of women and men who spent long days tending machines making an unholy din. Many, many Americans have ancestors who worked in the mills, which employed vast numbers of immigrants and ushered them into America.

Emmeline is happy to tell you about her life, and about the people from many other lands that she works beside. Their tasks are interesting, and the conditions under which they labor quite eye-opening. Enjoy some conversation with someone from the turn of the last century who has fascinating stories to tell.
